inI coulda/woulda/shoulda bought a condo at the 1 Ecker development, in an old “ice house” building at 16 Jessie Street.
This building has a very interesting history, has a category 1 historical designation, and was built right after the rubble was cleared from the earthquake and fire.
It also has a bit of recent history as well. The redevelopment of the building from offices to condos began, and then stopped during the financial crisis, and the developer eventually lost the building. It was purchased out of foreclosure and is now being finished. And what a location — 1/2 block from Market Street, right next to Golden Gate University, 2 blocks from the Transbay Terminal, and in a really nice little alley with a number of POPOS all around it. Of course, all of this means I am destined to miss out on the opportunity, idiot that I am.
But I wonder if any of the future residents will ever know that the “Jessie Street Community Center” was once there — whatever that was ?
If anyone knows what it was all about, do tell.
